Sebastian Anti, Colette Salemi, Jonathan Rigberg, Karishma Silva, and Johannes Hoogeveen (2025). "A New Expanded Dataset to Study Refugee Camps in sub-Saharan Africa 1999-2024."
Our team is augmenting and expanding on the African Refugee Dataset (ARD) that Sebastian Anti and I began developing in 2018. Our objective is to release the data publicly, along with a codebook and a working paper, at the end of July 2025. We are grateful for the support of the World Bank with this endeavor as well as our excellent RA Jonathan Rigberg.
Sebastian Anti, Abubakr Ayesh, and Colette Salemi "The forest cover impacts of improved cookstoves."
We are evaluating the impacts of the Tubeho Neza large-scale improved cookstove rollout on Rwandan forest cover (2014-present). The Tubeho Neza program, undertaken by DelAgua Corp, has delivered over 1.5 million stoves to Rwandan households to date. Our study uses satellite data to examine changes on forest canopy cover in response to rollouts at the local (cell/village) level. The study will be further enriched through qualitative data collection (August 2025) with participant households, as well as insights from government and nonprofit key informants. We thank DelAgua Corp. for partnering with us as well as fieldwork support services from NjordFrey.
Obleo Demandre, C. Austin Davis, and Colette Salemi. "Greenspace Proximity and Refugee Mental Health."
Obleo Demandre (PhD student, University of British Columbia) undertook the first draft of this study as an undergraduate. We are working together with two waves of the Cox Bazaar Panel Survey to examine the impact of greenspace proximity on Rohingya refugee mental health in the Kutapalong Expansion Site (Cox’s Bazaar, Bangladesh).
Mike Janes, Colette Salemi, and Marija Terry-Brownhill. "Willingness-to-pay for residential heat pumps in British Columbia."
We are applying hedonic regression techniques to 20+ years of MLS listing data for the Greater Victoria Real Estate catchment area to estimate Victorians’ willingness-to-pay for residential heat pump technology. We are examining variation by geographic area, unit type, and over time..
Obleo Demandre, Nathaniel Hope-Tucker, and Colette Salemi. "Trends in Canadian Industrial Toxic Release Abatement."
We examine descriptive trends in toxic release across provinces, industries, and over time using the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI). The study carefully considers changes in NPRI reporting requirements and focuses on Critical Air Contaminants .
Angela Daly, Donn Feir, Barry Watson, and Colette Salemi. "Indigenous Canadians’ pollution exposure and its health consequences."
We are matching pollution release spatial data with population data from Statistics Canada to examine levels and trends in pollution exposure for Indigenous Canadians. Future efforts will match this exposure data to health outcomes to further investigate dispararities in morbidity and mortality.
